Everyday people were loosing jobs and incomes with no way of knowing when normality will return. The coronavirus pandemic situation became to much stressful for people and it seriously challenged more than our health. We began buying, cooking and eating very differently as we became housebound.The virus limited our trips to the market with the focused lists. Food prices surged. We turned to affordable and low cost source of food. As the supples dwindled, there was a significance reduction in food wastage.

Food consumption and eating habits are likely to be impacted as a result of all the new concerns about hygiene, personal safety and social distancing. Fear of contagion reduced visits to food markets, as  one can expect to see a shift in how people buy and consume food - lower restaurant traffic, increased e-commerce deliveries and rise in eating at home. Restaurants daily traffic dropped precipitously compared to same period in 2019. Closure of restaurants and food stands caused a ripple effect among related industries such as food production, liquor, wine and beer production, food and beverage shipping,fishing and farming.

Online grocery shoping has grown subsequently. Third party delivery companies and restaurants concepts will have a stronger focus on a touchless coustomer service.

There will be decrease in street food consumption, greater pick-up in takeaways and better prospects for home delivery . Lesser eating out  appears to be the biggest lossers as the food business are likely to be restaurants, food stands, and vendors, unless they are able to pivot and offer meals with minimal human touch. Gloved, masked services with low or no contact technologies will be the new normal .

People will return to home cooking as home-made foods is the new normal ever since the lockdown. It is more healthier and safer. Many more members of the family started to enter the kitchen and cook. They became the new home chefs. 

Opportunities for Pop - up kitchens will increase as it can ensure clean, safe and hygiene packaging. They can make small quantities of  fresh foods in their home kitchen and supply anything from dhokla to samosa to homes and offices not very far away.

There will be Increase in takeaways as they are cheaper than eating out at restaurant. Its more convenient and efficient too. Swiggy, Uber Eats,and  Zomato became more of a home delivery market as they adopted extra hygiene measures  like sanitizing, taking employees temperature, everyday screening, sanitizing delivery bags after every order.

 More focus will be on a vegetarian diet, fresh seasonal vegetables, anti-oxidant ingredients will also play a major role. Imported ingredients would be replaced by local ones.ingredients from Ayurveda like raw fresh turmeric, ginger, citrus fruits will definitely be part of our daily diet. 

With people switching from an animal based diet to a plant based one, we will see the popularisation of mock meat and meat alternatives. Many restaurants will give their customers an option to opt for mock meat instead of the real thing.
